Merdeka Day 2013 for Malaysia

Malaysia will be celebrating its 56th Independence Day on 31st August 2013. Merdeka means independent in Malay Language. What I am showing you below, is a special advertisement by PETRONAS, the Malaysian National Oil Company. PETRONAS has always been known to make remarkable heart-wrenching advertisements every year in almost every festivals or celebration.

The advertisement is very, very much about the rich diversity of Malaysians and their ways of life. Malays constitute of about 65% of the population, Chinese about 35%, Indians and other indigenous people in Borneo mostly, make up the rest of the percentage.

You gotta visit a kampung to appreciate the many kampung scenes in this video... no, I'm really serious! Enjoy, people~

Keeping our Kampung experience REAL

Keeping our experiences REAL (Recreational, Educational, Adventurous, & just LOADS of fun), these two siblings from Egypt cannot be happier to be able to spend their time in the kampung.

Not only the learn how to fish and get to know its name, they are adventurous enough to cycle around the kampung too! These kids are so adorable and playful. Hagar (the girl), spent the day learning how to play congkak, a traditional Malay game as well. By end of the tour, she was already an expert!

Tour the Traditional Malay Wooden House

Rumah Melayu (Malay House), are traditional dwellings, originating before the arrival of foreign or modern influences, and constructed by the indigenous ethnic Malay of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo, made of timber and wood.

There are not many around anymore, as Malaysia is heading towards becoming a modern society. Most of the Malay Wooden House are only in the deep rural areas. We are lucky that 35 km away from the big city of Kuala Lumpur, these Malay wooden houses still exist, so tourists are welcomed to come in and see how the local kampung people live :)

Magic Herbs & Plants in the Herb Garden

A session with the "Herb Doctor" would open your eyes to the various types of trees, flowers and plants used in every day life - before the emergence of medical practitioners. Well, some are still being used until now.

The "Herb Doctor" will fascinate you with his quirky experiments of smell, taste and touch. A session that you will remember most of all.

Taste & Try Out...

When you are in a kampung, forget about formalities. Taste all the new food and fruits. Relax yourself amongst the green trees, chirping birds, and the calm sounds coming from the nearby river.

Try out traditional clothes - pretend that you are about to marry a Malay woman ;-)

Be adventurous and just have loads of fun!

If this is your first time seeing one, grab the opportunity to test your strength and skill to tap rubber out these trees. It may not be as easy as it seems.

What is Tengkolok or Tanjak?

How cute are these adorable Japanese couple?

What the Japanese man is wearing is called a tengkolok or tanjak. The tanjak or tengkolok, are popularly accepted as the traditional Malay headwears for men in Malaysia, although the Malays traditionally wear headwears and head-gears in various forms. Just as hats, berets, caps, and others are suited to their particular dressings in the western world, the Malay tanjak or tengkolok is worn and complements exquisitely the traditional full Malay costume of Baju Melayu.

 Besides worn during traditional Malay weddings by the groom during the bersanding ceremony, the tanjak or tengkolok are put on during formal and public ceremonies where royalties grace the occasion.
